How to Pair a Mattress with the Right Bed Frame
Foundation type affects feel and warranty. Don’t buy a mattress and frame as unrelated strangers.
Platform vs. box spring
Many modern mattresses are designed for solid or slatted platform foundations. Slats should typically be no more than 2–3 inches apart unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Using the wrong foundation can void warranties and create premature sagging—always check the mattress brand’s requirements.
Storage beds and airflow
Storage beds are brilliant for small U.S. bedrooms, but some hybrids need airflow underneath. If your mattress brand warns against solid platforms without ventilation, choose a design with gaps or a bunkie board approved by the maker.
